Book Signings

Like many other writers, one of the reasons I write is because I find it an easier way to communicate. Talking to people I don't know is something I am able to do easily when working as an event photographer. I have no qualms about walking up to groups, interrupting their conversations and asking if I can grab a photo of them, but trying to sell a book is a lot different.
At my first signing, I sat there with my knitting, watching people come through the door and offering a smile if they looked at me. But most just kept on walking. I imagined I looked rather pathetic. A couple approached my table and asked for directions to the fantasy section of the bookstore; a woman asked me about the pricing on a greeting card; someone else asked if I knew whether the kits they sold that looked like a miniature bookstore lit up or not.
Nobody asked about my book.
One of the sales clerks took pity on me and said, "You'd probably do a lot better if you started engaging with people more."
Hint taken.
The next Saturday, I was at Indigo in Kelowna's Orchard Park Mall and it was a completely different world. After having done an interview on CBC Radio earlier in the week and a feature article about the book coming out in the local paper, the difference was such that Indigo sold out of books!
Coming up this weekend, I'll be in St. John's, NL and doing signings and a reading at the following places:
May 1 - book launch (reading) at The Rooms in St Johns 7PM
May 2 - author signing Kentmount St John’s Chapters/Indigo 12-2pm
May 2 - author signing Avalon Mall Coles 4 to 6P
May 3 - author signing Village Mall Coles 1 to 3PM
